ALGONQUIN, Ill. — Milwaukee Area Technical College men's tennis closed out its regular season Sunday with a 4–0 road loss to McHenry County College at The Racket Club, highlighted by a competitive effort from sophomore
Isaiah Marin at No. 3 singles.
Editor's note: MATC is competing this season with only three eligible players and therefore must forfeit No. 2 and No. 3 doubles along with No. 4–6 singles in every dual match.
Marin nearly extended his late‑season surge, pushing a tight first set before falling 7–6, 6–4 at No. 3 singles. The loss snaps his two‑match win streak, but he still closed the regular season 3–1 over his final four matches to finish 5–5 overall at the No. 3 spot.
"Isaiah continued his strong play over the second half of the season," MATC head coach Mark Picard said. "On Saturday he won a hard‑fought first set and then carried that momentum into an easy second set to win the match. On Sunday he dropped the first set in a tiebreaker and then a close second set. He had numerous chances to close out the first set but was unable to take advantage. Isaiah has become very good at controlling the neutral‑ball rallies and looking for opportunities to play offense. I look forward to seeing what he can do in the postseason tournament."
At the top of the lineup,
Braxton Brusky dropped a 6–0, 6–0 decision at No. 1 singles, while
Peyton Kuzminski fell 6–2, 6–2 at No. 2.
In the lone contested doubles match, Brusky and Kuzminski fell 8–1 at No. 1.
Picard reflected on the broader challenges of the season as well.
"The season overall didn't turn out quite like I hoped," Picard said. "We had eight men on the team in the fall, but due to various circumstances ended up with only three. This meant that as a team we had no chance to win dual matches as we were forfeiting five of nine flights. I think the guys did the best we could under the circumstances.
Peyton Kuzminski at No. 2 singles and
Isaiah Marin at No. 3 singles qualified for the regional tournament. I'm looking forward to seeing how far they can advance in the tournament. Unfortunately, even with strong effort,
Braxton Brusky and our No. 1 doubles team were unable to qualify."
MATC finishes the regular season 0–10.
