MATC Leaves No Doubt, Secures Seventh Consecutive Region 4 District Championship

ROCKFORD, Ill. —  Milwaukee Area Technical College left no doubt in Sunday's Region 4 Division II (Midwest District A) championship game, leading from start to finish in an 84–68 victory over No. 17 Bryant & Stratton College to capture its eighth district title overall and seventh straight (MATC declined a 2021 postseason berth due to COVID‑19 precautions). The Stormers, ranked No. 5 nationally, improved to 30–3, extended their winning streak to 23 games, and punched their ticket to the NJCAA Division II National Tournament with a performance defined by defensive pressure, interior dominance and timely shot‑making.

"It's a difficult road when you have a target on your back for the entire season, and that type of pressure can galvanize a team for this type of playoff run," MATC head coach Randy Casey said. "We are proud of our guys, knowing the pressure that comes with maintaining success over several years. We look forward to watching the Selection Show and being able to compete at the national tournament."

MATC never trailed and never allowed a tie, opening the game with a defensive surge that set the tone for the afternoon. The Stormers forced turnovers on Bryant & Stratton's first two possessions, converted both into points and built a 10–3 lead before the Bobcats could settle in. Qi'Andre Washington and Raydelh Boutin sparked the early push with steals and transition finishes, while Jayden Hackett ignited the bench with a two‑handed dunk off a turnover.

Bryant & Stratton stayed afloat behind perimeter shooting, hitting three first‑half 3‑pointers that each halted MATC's momentum, but MATC's pressure never relented. The Stormers forced 10 turnovers in the opening half and repeatedly turned live‑ball steals into layups, stretching the margin to 30–21 on a Hackett three and a pair of Boutin free throws. Boutin was masterful in the opening half, scoring 12 points on 4‑of‑5 shooting with four assists to steady the Stormers and guide them to a 36–30 halftime cushion."

MATC's composure and physicality took over in the second half. After a quick Bryant & Stratton three cut the lead to 36–33, the Stormers answered immediately with a Rivers layup, a Washington jumper and two Rivers free throws to restore control at 42–37. Moments later, Hackett delivered a momentum‑shifting dunk off a steal, and Jordan Jones added a free throw to push the margin to 45–37.

Every Bobcat surge was met with a counterpunch — Noah Daniels buried a corner three after a Bickham triple, Jones scored in transition, and Hackett drilled another three to keep MATC in front. The decisive stretch came inside six minutes, when Daniels jumped a passing lane for a steal and layup, Rivers knocked down two free throws and Washington punctuated the run with a breakaway dunk to make it 73–58, effectively sealing the Region 4 title.

From there, MATC closed like a champion. Hackett buried a deep three to push the lead to 15, Rivers scored again inside and Daniels added a late layup to give the Stormers their largest lead of the game at 84–68 with 21 seconds left.

Hackett led MATC with 21 points on 8‑for‑16 shooting, adding four rebounds and two assists in a team-high 38 minutes. Rivers delivered 18 points and seven rebounds while shooting 7‑for‑10 from the field, and Washington filled the box score with 13 points, five steals, three assists and three rebounds. Boutin added 12 points, four assists and four rebounds in an ultra‑efficient 4‑for‑5 performance, and Jones provided 10 points, three steals and two assists off the bench. Ozzie Johnson anchored the interior defensively with seven rebounds and three blocks.

MATC shot 50.8 percent from the field, outscored Bryant & Stratton 40–28 in the paint and turned 24 Bobcat turnovers into 31 points. The Stormers also held a 37–30 rebounding advantage and reached their largest lead in the final minute.

UP NEXT
