MILWAUKEE, Wis. — No. 16-ranked Milwaukee Area Technical College men's basketball overwhelmed Oakton College from the opening tip Tuesday night, building a 47-point halftime cushion before cruising to a 114-59 victory at home. The 55-point rout matched the Stormers' largest margin of the season — equaling their Nov. 13 win over Elgin — and pushed MATC to 9-3 overall while remaining unbeaten at 4-0 on their home floor.
The Stormers shot well above their season norms, converting 47-of-85 attempts (55.3%) from the field while knocking down 13-of-35 threes (37.1%) and finishing a flawless 7-for-7 at the free throw line. The performance edged past their season averages of 49.2% overall, 36.9% from long range and 71.9% at the stripe, underscoring the team's efficiency in the blowout win.
Beyond the shooting touch, MATC's dominance stretched across the box score. The Stormers forced 25 turnovers while committing just 14, converting those miscues into a 43-8 advantage in points off turnovers. They also controlled the glass for an 18-6 edge in second-chance points, saw their reserves outscore Oakton's bench 62-6, and buried the Owls from deep with a 39-9 margin in three-point scoring.
"Obviously we are more comfortable playing at home since we are on these courts every day, and so I think it's just the comfort level," MATC head coach
Randy Casey said. "At the beginning of the year, we're road-tested by the time we get to play home games because we play so many on the road to start the season. It's good to play at home, in front of our fans."
Despite opening the contest 0-for-7 from deep, MATC leaned on its tenacious defense, holding Oakton without a made field goal until the 14:04 mark when the Owls trimmed the deficit to 9-4. The Stormers quickly answered by hitting their next five shots — including two buckets from freshman forward
Turon Rivers — to spark an 11-4 run and build a 20-8 advantage. MATC later strung together a decisive 17-0 spurt, highlighted by seven points from freshman
Sterling Hoarde, to stretch the margin to 45-14. The Stormers closed the half shooting 57.1 percent (28-of-49) overall and 38.1 percent from three after connecting on eight of their final 14 attempts.
"It's just our intensity on the defensive end," Sophomore guard
Jayden Hackett said. "We preach it every day in practice — intensity, intensity, intensity. I thought that's what we did to start."
MATC continued its offensive onslaught after the break, extending the lead to as many as 61 points before settling for the 55-point victory. All 14 rostered players saw action, with 12 logging at least 10 minutes and six reaching double figures in scoring.
"Our message at halftime was to just come out the same way we did the opening half and to not let up at all," Hackett said. "Our goal is to put a full 40 minutes together. So we just kept our foot on the gas."
Jayden Hackett paced the Stormers with 15 points on 6-of-12 shooting, adding three rebounds, three assists, a steal and a block.
Qi'Andre Washington matched him with 15 points while chipping in two assists, a rebound, a steal and a block.
Noah Daniels buried two of five attempts from beyond the arc to finish with 14 points, four steals and two assists. Rivers contributed 12 points, nine rebounds, three assists and two blocks, while
Ozzie Johnson and
Jordan Jones each added 10 points. Off the bench, freshman
Aidan Chapman provided a spark by hitting three triples in four attempts to total nine points in 11 minutes.
