CICERO, Ill. — The No. 8 Milwaukee Area Technical College men's basketball team had its six-game winning streak snapped Saturday, falling 88-80 on the road at Morton College. The Stormers trailed 42-33 at halftime but rallied to within 69-66 with 5:40 remaining before being outscored 19-14 down the stretch. The loss dropped MATC to 6-2 overall and 4-2 away from home.
MATC shot 50 percent from the field (25-of-50) but struggled to match Morton's perimeter attack. The Stormers went 4-of-13 from 3-point range while the Panthers hit 8-of-22, and Morton also held a slight edge at the free-throw line. MATC finished with a 31-29 rebounding advantage, but 17 turnovers proved costly as Morton converted them into 18 points. The Stormers' bench provided a spark with 35 points, though Morton controlled second-chance opportunities and points in the paint to help build an 18-point advantage midway through in the first half.
"We did not come out ready to play," Stormers head coach
Randy Casey said. "Morton wanted the game more than we did and it showed in the end result."
Sophomore guard
Raydelh Boutin paced the Stormers with 19 points on 5-of-10 shooting, including a perfect 9-for-9 from the free-throw line. He added three rebounds, two assists and two steals in 36 minutes.
Freshman forward
Jason Lawani came off the bench to score 17 points on 5-of-6 shooting, along with seven rebounds and one assist. Sophomore guard
Jayden Hackett contributed 11 points, five rebounds, two assists and one steal, while freshman reserve
Turon Rivers chipped in 10 points on 4-of-8 shooting with two rebounds, one assist and a block.
First-year forward
Ozzie Johnson rounded out the effort with nine points, seven rebounds, two assists, two steals and one block.
UP NEXT
MATC (6-2) will host Waubonsee at 8 p.m. Monday.
