PORT HURON, Mich. – The Milwaukee Area Technical College women's basketball team finished the Skippers Classic in Port Huron, Michigan, much stronger than it began.
After being faced with a crushing 76-48 defeat at the hands of St. Clair County Community College on Dec. 6, the Stormers managed to bounce back and secure a convincing win of their own against Oakland Community College Saturday. Led by its perimeter defense that held the Owls to 19.4 percent on 3-pointers (13-of-67), MATC went on to secure a 88-78 victory in comeback fashion on Dec. 7 to improve its record to 4-8.
Saturday's win looked a lot different in comparison to Friday's defeat. In their game against St. Clair County Friday, the Stormers' shot just 25.4 percent from the field (15-of-59). It was night and day compared to when they shot 42.5 percent (31-of-73) less than 24 hours later in their win over Oakland.
In MATC's bounce back win over the Owls, the Stormers were able to keep their opponent from torching them from distance. Having quickly fallen behind 25-16 entering the second quarter, MATC buckled down defensively and outscored Oakland each of the three following quarters. They limited the Owls to just 13 made 3-pointers on 67 attempts throughout the contest. It played a key part in the Stormers' ability to turn a 47-40 halftime deficit into a 10-point victory.
Not only did MATC protect the three-point line, but it also managed to dominate the painted area. As a team, the Stormers outscored the Owls 58-30 in paint points. MATC sophomore
Alexis Ayers led the way with a team-high 24 points on 7-of-16 shooting and an 8-of-10 mark from the stripe. She also added 10 rebounds, three assists and a pair of steals to help notch a double-double.
Stormers' freshman
Makayla Carney also recorded a double-double with 11 points and a team-high 17 rebounds, including nine offensive rebounds. Freshman
Abby Moertl finished one point shy of her own double-double, totaling nine points and 12 rebounds. Freshmen
Chloey Bynum and
Arlinda Roundtree each contributed 17 points.
As for Friday's contest against the Skippers, MATC had little success. They shot 25.4 percent from the field, (15-of-59), 10 percent on three's (1-of-10) and 57.1 percent at the free throw line (16-of-28). Not to mention they also had 24 turnovers and were out-rebounded 45-39.
Bynum found herself doing most of the heavy lifting during the Stormers's 28-point loss as she totaled a team-high 18 points on 42.9 percent shooting (6-of-14). The first-year point guard also knocked down her team's only made 3-pointer on three attempts while adding three rebounds and a pair assists.
