Summers, Mitchell Collect All-Region Honors After Impactful Rookie Seasons

MILWAUKEE, Wis. — A new wave of talent is carrying MATC women's basketball forward, and the entire Region 4 has taken notice. Freshmen guards Emani Summers and SaNyai Mitchell were named to the 2026 NJCAA Region 4 All‑Region Teams, with Summers earning Second Team (District A) honors and Mitchell landing on the Third Team. Their selections mark MATC's first all‑region recognition since Mikkalla Robertson's standout 2023‑24 campaign.

The duo played a major role in MATC's jump from a 9‑22 record last year to a 16‑15 finish this season, helping the Stormers climb above .500 and return to postseason contention. Summers and Mitchell emerged as impact players throughout their debut year, combining steady scoring with the kind of two‑way competitiveness that anchored MATC's backcourt. Their honors reflect both individual growth and the program's continued push to elevate its standing within Region 4.

MATC head coach Arom Murrell praised the pair for reshaping the program's foundation, saying their impact accelerated the team's turnaround and set a new standard for what the Stormers expect moving forward.

"I am particularly proud and in awe of what these two young ladies accomplished this year as true first‑year college freshmen. Of course, the entire former roster worked hard this year, and we overcame many injuries and other circumstances throughout the year, but these two young ladies came out with recognition because of their hard work.

Sa'Nyai overcame a lack of confidence early in the season to ultimately become one of the most confident and outspoken leaders for this team by the end of the season. She stabilized our offense, granted, effectively, and was our pseudo closer by the end of the season.

Emani proved to be one of our most relied upon scorers in our offense and was often tasked with playing one of the more potent offensive players on the opposing team. She was often called upon to get us going offensively or to get that tough bucket in the clutch moment.

With these two young ladies in the Lady Stormers program, our future is bright. The turnaround from last year's team to what these two young ladies bring to the program leaves us in a position to know that we will be among the region leaders, hopefully again, going into next season," Murrell said.

Summers: A near double‑double force
Summers delivered one of the most complete freshman seasons in Region 4, leading MATC with 392 points, 275 rebounds, 85 assists, 76 steals and 25 blocks across 30 games. Her 9.2 rebounds per game ranked 19th in the region — an exceptional mark for a guard — and her 76 steals tied for 16th among all Region 4 players. She averaged 13.1 points, 9.2 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 2.5 steals while playing a team‑high 32.9 minutes, becoming one of the few guards in the league to flirt with a double‑double every night. Her physicality on the glass, ability to generate extra possessions and willingness to shoulder heavy usage made her a central piece of MATC's turnaround and a clear Second Team selection.

"It means a lot to me to make the All‑Region Second Team," Summers said. "I feel like I put in a lot of hard work to get to where I am today, so earning this shows that the work is paying off."

Even with the honor, Summers said she's far from satisfied. She hopes to reach 1,000 career points by the end of next season and is focused on improving her perimeter shooting.

"I'm not really a confident shooter yet," she said. "That's what I'm working on. If I get my percentage up, I feel like I can be unstoppable."

Mitchell: A steady hand at the point
While Summers powered MATC inside the arc, Mitchell provided the Stormers with a reliable perimeter presence and a poised floor general. The freshman point guard totaled 292 points, 89 rebounds, 75 assists, 50 steals and 4 blocks while averaging 9.7 points, 2.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.7 steals in 30.2 minutes per game. She knocked down 36 threes at a 32.1 percent clip and became MATC's most dependable perimeter shooter, highlighted by a career‑best 24‑point performance at Blackhawk Technical College on Feb. 16, which included four made three‑pointers.

Her ability to blend scoring bursts with playmaking earned her a spot on the Region 4 Third Team.

"It feels good knowing that not just my coaches, but other coaches around the region see the potential I have," Mitchell said. "It feels really good to be recognized."

Mitchell said her offseason focus is on handling defensive pressure and becoming a more confident leader at the point.

"I want to get better at running the offense so I'm not scared in certain moments," she said. "There were times this season where I felt a little rushed. So I want to be more calm and patient heading into my sophomore year."
