Early Trouble, Late Pushes Not Enough as MATC Drops Two to South Suburban

OAK CREEK, Wis. — MATC never found its footing on Saturday, absorbing a home doubleheader sweep at the hands of South Suburban to slip to 8–16 on the season. The Stormers were undone by a four‑run third inning in the opener and an error‑filled start to Game 2, where eight defensive miscues and a six‑run first inning set the tone for a 13–5 loss in six innings.

South Suburban dictated the tone of the afternoon from the early frames, turning traffic on the bases into crooked numbers and forcing MATC to play from behind in both games. The Stormers generated pockets of offense and showed flashes of resilience, but the Bulldogs' timely hitting and MATC's defensive lapses created gaps too wide to close. By the time the final outs settled, the sweep reflected a day where the Stormers' effort was present but their execution lagged behind the pace of the opponent.

"Overall, I'm disappointed in how we played today," MATC head coach Joe Kuntner said.

Game 1: South Suburban 7, Stormers 3 (7 Innings)
South Suburban seized control early and never let go, using scoring bursts in each of the first three innings to hand MATC a 7–3 loss in the opener. The Bulldogs built a 6–0 lead by the middle of the third and kept the Stormers at arm's length the rest of the way, despite MATC pushing across runs in three separate innings.

"We weren't able to move runners over when we needed to, and so we didn't deserve to win this one," Kuntner said.

South Suburban opened the game with a leadoff double that eventually scored on an RBI groundout to right, then added another run in the second after a one‑out triple and two walks loaded the bases. A wild pitch brought home the runner from third before MATC starter Ellie Brzek worked out of the jam to keep the deficit at 2–0.

The Bulldogs broke the game open in the third, stringing together four hits and a walk to plate four runs and force an early pitching change. Brzek finished with 2.1 innings, allowing six runs (five earned) on six hits and three walks with two strikeouts.

"Brzek struggled with command today," Kuntner said. "It just wasn't her day."

MATC finally broke through in the bottom of the third when Rylyn Paulick lifted a sacrifice fly to left, bringing home the Stormers' first run. The play briefly looked like a momentum spark, but the inning ended abruptly when the catcher fired to third to cut down the trailing runner, who also attempted to tag on the play.

The Stormers continued to chip away. In the fifth, Aniesa Neave singled and later scored on an RBI single from Emma Roeper to make it 6–2. After South Suburban added a solo home run in the sixth, MATC answered again when Amira Baldon led off with a single and came home on an RBI hit from Alyssa Pavlovich.

MATC threatened one last time in the seventh. Emily Pujanauski singled to start the inning, and after a popout, Mia Carani drew a walk to put two runners on. A fielder's choice erased the lead runner, and a flyout to center ended the game with two Stormers stranded.

Jordan Hanserd provided stability in relief, working three innings and allowing one earned run on six hits with three strikeouts and no walks. Brooke Peters closed with 1.2 scoreless, hitless innings.

Neave paced the Stormers' offense, going 2‑for‑3 with two singles, a stolen base and a run scored. Pujanauski added a single, while Carani reached base three times on two walks and a single. Pavlovich contributed an RBI single, and Paulick drove in a run with her sacrifice fly.

Game 2: South Suburban 13, Stormers 5 (6 Innings)
South Suburban turned early chaos into a commanding lead and rode it to a 13–5 win in six innings, completing the sweep despite being outhit by MATC. The Stormers collected 12 hits in the nightcap but were undone by eight defensive errors that repeatedly extended innings and fueled South Suburban's scoring bursts.

"We weren't ready to play, and that's 100% my responsibility," Kuntner said.

The Bulldogs jumped on MATC immediately, scoring six runs in the first inning on a mix of three hits, two walks and a pair of defensive miscues. Two more errors in the second helped push the margin to 8–0, and South Suburban stretched it to 11–0 in the third before the Stormers recorded their first run.

MATC finally broke through in the fourth. Carani singled to start the inning, and consecutive infield hits from Hayley Beckman and Hallie Knurowski loaded the bases. Caia Lund followed with an RBI single, and Kenzie Herther added another run on a fielder's‑choice grounder to get the Stormers on the board.

The biggest swing of the day came an inning later, when Jayden Moss turned on a pitch and launched a three‑run homer to left, trimming the deficit to 11–5 and briefly shifting momentum. South Suburban answered with a two‑run homer in the sixth, and MATC's final push in the bottom half ended with two runners stranded.

"We needed that homer by Moss," Kuntner said. "Jayden is a spark, and sometimes this team goes as far as she goes."

Maiya Tearney took the loss after 1.1 innings, allowing eight runs (three earned) on four hits and two walks. Chloe Lago provided steady relief with 4.1 innings of work, giving up five runs (two earned) on six hits with no walks. Peters recorded the final out with a scoreless appearance.

Moss paced the Stormers at the plate with her three‑run homer. Carani added a pair of hits, including a double, and scored twice. Sommer Beckman went 2‑for‑2 with a run scored, and Roeper chipped in a double.

UP NEXT
MATC (8–16) heads to Madison on Tuesday for a doubleheader against the WolfPack. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m., with Game 2 to follow at 5 p.m.
