Jung Sets MATC Home Run Record in Doubleheader Loss to Harper

OAK CREEK, Wis. — Milwaukee Area Technical College baseball entered Friday on a three‑game win streak, but Harper College halted the surge with 11–3 and 8–4 victories in a rescheduled doubleheader at the Oak Creek Campus.

The Stormers kept both games competitive early — including a record‑breaking swing from sophomore Jaiden Jung in Game 2 — but Harper's late‑inning pushes and a lightning‑shortened finish sealed the sweep.

"It's unfortunate, but you're in the Midwest," MATC head coach Caleb Bounds said. "Weather is always going to play a factor. Rain, snow — unfortunately you can't play in lightning."

GAME 1: Harper 11, MATC 3
Harper methodically built its lead in the opener, turning a tight 2–1 game through four innings into an 11–3 win behind scoring bursts in the fifth, sixth and seventh. The Hawks plated three runs in the fifth, two in the sixth and four in the seventh, steadily widening the margin as MATC searched for timely offense.

"Right now we're just not playing great fundamental team baseball and executing in the spots we need to execute," Bounds said.

The Stormers matched Harper early. After the Hawks scratched across a run in the second, MATC loaded the bases and drew a two-out walk to tie the game at 1–1. Jung followed with a deep drive to left that was tracked down at the fence, narrowly missing a grand slam and ending the inning's threat.

"Jung's been doing it all year for us," Bounds said. "He's been great, but we're relying on just a couple of guys to produce. It needs to be up and down the lineup. He hit a great ball that goes 395 feet — and unfortunately in our park, that's not a home run."

Harper reclaimed the lead in the fourth, capitalizing on back‑to‑back two‑out singles and an infield error. The momentum carried into the fifth, where two singles, a hit‑by‑pitch, a walk, an RBI groundout and a wild pitch stretched the lead to 5–1. An RBI double in the sixth made it 7–1.

Freshman right‑hander reliever Zakary Vanlerberghe handled the sixth, allowing two earned runs on three hits. In the seventh, sophomore Vince Cameranesi issued three walks and a hit‑by‑pitch as Harper extended the lead to 11–1 before Connor Ziman recorded the final two outs, giving up one earned run on two hits and a walk.

MATC showed late life in the bottom of the seventh. Austin Arnold worked a leadoff walk and scored on a one‑out RBI triple from Easton Morehouse, who turned in one of the Stormers' strongest offensive performances of the day. Morehouse finished 2‑for‑3 with a triple, two RBIs, a walk and a run scored. Jung followed with an RBI single to bring him home and close the gap to 11–3.

Jung added two singles, an RBI and a walk, while Tyler Lee contributed a double as part of MATC's six‑hit effort.

GAME 2: Harper 8, MATC 4 (6 innings, lightning)
Jung delivered the highlight of the afternoon in Game 2, launching a two‑out, three‑run homer to left in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game at 4–4. The blast — his seventh of the season — set a new MATC single‑season home run record, breaking the previous mark of six shared by Julian Jimenez (2023), Scotty Savage (2023) and Daniel Flores (2024). But Harper answered with a four‑run sixth, and with lightning moving in, the game was called after six innings.

Freshman right‑hander Manny Sostre started and worked four innings, allowing four earned runs on eight hits with one walk and two strikeouts. Jerry Vasek followed with a scoreless fifth, giving up one hit and two walks while striking out one. Max Nottingham took the loss after surrendering four earned runs in the sixth on three hits and two walks. Alex Dvorak opened the seventh and surrendered a leadoff single before the game was halted.
Harper outhit MATC 13–3.

The Hawks opened the scoring in the second with a two‑out RBI double after a leadoff double set the table. Sostre escaped further damage and again worked out of trouble in the third, but Harper manufactured three runs in the inning — a hit‑and‑run RBI single followed by a two‑out, two‑RBI double that one‑hopped the right‑field fence — to build a 4–1 lead.

MATC threatened in the bottom of the second. Carson Sieler drew a leadoff walk, Easton Stewart singled and Lee walked to load the bases. Sieler scored on a wild pitch to tie the game, but a ground‑ball double play ended the inning with three runners stranded.

"We just have to have better at‑bats and a better understanding of what we're supposed to be doing," Bounds said. "We need to accomplish the simple goal of getting at least one run home. We have to do a better job executing that."

Sieler doubled again in the fourth but was stranded at third. One inning later, Jung erased the deficit with his record‑setting three‑run homer to left.

"When I first came here as a freshman in 2023–24, I always wanted to hold the all‑time home run record at MATC," Jung said. "I can't thank Coach Bounds, Coach Butkiewicz and all the other coaches enough for helping me get to this point. It's unreal — anything is possible when you put your mind to it."

Harper answered immediately. After a lineout, a walk and a single, a fielder's‑choice attempt to third was late and loaded the bases. A three‑RBI triple followed, turning a tie game into a 7–4 Harper lead. Another walk set up first and third, and an RBI single pushed the margin to 8–4 before Nottingham exited. Two routine outs ended the inning.

MATC went down in order in the bottom of the sixth, and with lightning continuing into the seventh, umpires called the game.

Jung finished with three RBIs on the home run. Sieler added a double, a stolen base and a run scored, while Stewart recorded a single.
