Stormers’ Home Win Streak Ends in Defeat to No. 22 Rock Valley

MILWAUKEE, Wis. — Milwaukee Area Technical College saw its five‑game home winning streak come to an end Thursday night, falling 80–57 to No. 22 Rock Valley as the Stormers struggled to keep pace with the Golden Eagles' tempo and committed 32 turnovers in a game they trailed the entire way.

Head coach Arom Murrell said the Stormers struggled to adjust to Rock Valley's pace.

"In order to match Rock Valley's style of play, you either have to pick them up early or you have to retreat back because they are going to push the ball up the floor," Murrell said. "That's their brand of ball. So again, being part of that scouting report and part of what was told on how to counteract that, we failed to execute."

Rock Valley wasted no time imposing its fast-paced tempo, opening on an 11–2 run as MATC started 1‑for‑6 from the field and committed nine turnovers in the first quarter. The Golden Eagles, who average nearly 38 three‑point attempts per game, knocked down four threes in the period — including three in the opening minutes to create an immediate 9–0 hole — and pushed the tempo even after made baskets. Sophomore guard Rachel Schlies provided a solid spark off the bench with six points on 2‑for‑4 shooting, but MATC still trailed 23–10 after one.

Rock Valley tightened its grip in the second quarter, outscoring MATC 22–9 while holding the Stormers to 4‑for‑16 shooting for the second straight period. Sophomore forward Moriah Landry briefly cut the deficit to 23–12 with an offensive‑rebound putback, but the Golden Eagles answered with a 13–0 run built on layups and transition chances. Rock Valley also went 9‑for‑9 at the free‑throw line in the quarter and 16‑for‑17 by halftime, compared with MATC's 3‑for‑8, helping the visitors take a 45–19 lead into the break.

"We only had 19 points at the half," Murrell said. "That was due to lack of execution."

MATC settled in defensively after halftime and did a much better job protecting the perimeter, holding Rock Valley to 2‑for‑11 from three in the third quarter. The Stormers kept the period competitive, falling just 16–13, but 11 more turnovers again limited MATC's momentum, even as Rock Valley managed only six points off those miscues. The Golden Eagles still pushed their advantage to its largest margin of the night at 60–28 before MATC steadied late in the quarter.

"Our primary focus was limiting shots on the perimeter," Murrell said. "Rock Valley is going to shoot a high volume of three's, and what did we do? In addition to allowing them to shoot threes, there was blatant lack of focus on defense, bad fouls, not getting back on defense, and then making horrible reaching fouls to put them at the free‑throw line."

MATC finished strong in the fourth quarter, outscoring Rock Valley 25–18 behind a late surge from Emani Summers, who scored 12 of her 20 points on 4‑for‑5 shooting after opening the night 1‑for‑7. The Stormers also won the rebounding battle 50–40, including a 25–15 edge on the offensive glass, but the deficit was too large to overcome. Rock Valley's pressure still produced a 21–14 advantage in points off turnovers, and MATC managed only a narrow 14–11 margin in second‑chance points despite its activity on the boards.

Summers paced the Stormers with 20 points, six rebounds, two assists and two steals, while Landry added a double‑double with 10 points and 14 rebounds — nine of them on the offensive glass — along with two steals and an assist. Laila Hamiel finished with nine points, three rebounds and three steals, and Schlies provided an efficient spark off the bench with eight points on 3‑for‑6 shooting and three steals in just 10 minutes after missing the entire second half with a nose injury.
