OAK CREEK, Wis. — The Milwaukee Area Technical College men's soccer team couldn't overcome an early 3-0 halftime deficit Saturday, falling 4-1 to South Suburban at home and dropping to 0-4-1 on the season.
"I was extremely disappointed because we had a good week of practice and felt we were preparing well for a team we thought we could have success against," MATC head coach Aron "Buddy" Gentry said. "Unfortunately, it didn't come to fruition. I hate to blame our age, but I think that plays a part — just not being in these situations often. But we'll reload, examine the tape, and focus internally on what we can fix."
Despite totaling six shots — including three on goal — in the first half, the Stormers couldn't capitalize on any scoring chances. Meanwhile, South Suburban struck early, scoring in the sixth minute to take a 1-0 lead before adding goals in the 38th and 44th minutes.
MATC finally got on the board midway through the second half. After a deflected free kick moments earlier, freshman midfielder
Reynaldo Paniagua buried a penalty kick into the back left corner to cut the deficit to 3-1.
That proved to be as close as the Stormers would get. South Suburban responded with a goal in the 64th minute to put the match out of reach. The Bulldogs finished with 20 shots, 10 on goal, and 11 corner kicks.
MATC ended the match with nine shots, five on goal, and four corners. Starting goalkeeper
Maxwell Clarksen recorded two saves and allowed three goals. Backup keeper
Sam Kulibert added four saves.
