OAK CREEK, Wisc. – The Stormers improved to 11-13 overall following an 8-3 road victory over Carthage College in nine innings Wednesday.
MATC faced a 3-2 deficit before scoring six unanswered runs between the fifth and seventh innings to help earn themselves a five-run win to improve to 5-6 on the road.
"It was good to see some guy who had not played a ton step up and produce," MATC head coach
Caleb Bounds said. "That was probably one of our most complete team effort wins we earned this season."
The Stormers broke the 0-0 tie in the top of the third after
Camdin Jansen drove in Ethan Morehouse on an RBI single. Carthage then recaptured the lead, 2-1, in the ensuing half inning off a single and a groundout.
Peyton Flees barreled a sac-fly, scoring
Cole Wissen, to knot things up at two runs apiece in the top of the fourth. Once again, the Firebirds answered by scoring a run of their own to regain a 3-2 lead in the bottom half of the inning.
A leadoff walk to
Jake Hall in the fifth quickly led to back-to-back doubles from
Camdin Jansen and
Marco Falletti. Both doubles plated two runs apiece, which helped MATC regain a 4-3 lead.
Leading by one run through six, the Stormers took advantage of four free bases off walks and hit-by-pitches in the seventh. It helped lead to a four-run inning following two-RBI singles from Wissen and Flees.
Relievers
Colin Weist,
Evan Phillips, and
Sean Lee shut things down in the seventh, eighth, and ninth innings respectively, with each pitcher tossing one scoreless inning without ever giving up a single hit.
MATC starter
Mitchel Meinke hurled three innings, giving up two runs on two hits with a pair of strikeouts.
Patrick Wajda picked up the win, tossing one scoreless inning with zero hits given up.
