CICERO, Ill. — Milwaukee Area Technical College women's basketball snapped a two-game skid in emphatic fashion Saturday, rolling past Morton College 89-35 on the road. The Stormers' defense dominated, holding the Panthers to just 11 points in the second half to help secure the 54-point blowout. The victory improved MATC to 3-4 overall and 3-2 away from home.
"It was a perfect bounce-back game after two tough losses," MATC head coach
Arom Murrell said. "We were able to regain some confidence and get everybody involved. We're hoping to carry some momentum into Monday's home matchup against Waubonsee." The
Stormers held an 11-8 edge after the first quarter and stretched the margin to 15 by halftime, pouring in 28 points in the second. Up 39-24 at the break, MATC erased any chance of a Morton rally by dominating the third quarter, outscoring the Panthers 24-2. From there, the Stormers coasted to a 54-point win — their largest margin of the season.
MATC controlled every statistical category, shooting nearly 49 percent from the field while holding Morton to just 25 percent. The Stormers owned the glass with a 40-25 rebounding advantage and forced 34 turnovers that led to 36 points. They poured in 56 points in the paint and added 21 second-chance points, building a lead that grew as large as 54 in the final minute. Sophomore
Rachel Schlies and freshman
Zirhe Sellers each scored a team-high 19 points to lead the Stormers.
Schlies added three rebounds, two assists and five steals, while Sellers nearly recorded a double-double with nine rebounds — six of them offensive — and five steals on 9-of-16 shooting (56.3 percent).
Sophomore
Moriah Landry shot 8-of-12 (66 percent) from the field to notch a double-double with 18 points, 11 rebounds, six steals and one assist.
Freshman
Emani Summers tallied 17 points on 7-of-14 shooting, along with seven rebounds, six assists and three steals.
Sa'Nyai Mitchell and
Laila Hamiel chipped in eight points apiece.
