MILWAUKEE, Wis. — The Milwaukee Area Technical College women's basketball team struggled to find its rhythm in the home opener Thursday, falling 67-50 to Elgin and dropping to 2-3 on the season.
The Stormers trailed 18-13 after the first quarter and went into halftime down 35-25 as the Spartans steadily built a double-digit lead. MATC's offense went ice cold in the third quarter, connecting on just 2 of 18 shots, including 0 of 5 from beyond the arc. Elgin outscored MATC 11-4 in the period to take a commanding 46-29 advantage into the final frame. The Stormers never recovered and ultimately fell by 17.
"I think our shooting as a whole is the difference of the game," MATC head coach
Arom Murrell said. "We shot like crap all night. We missed like 15-16 layups, not to mention we had 24 turnovers. So that's the ball game right there."
MATC shot 28.2 percent in the first half, including just 1 of 10 from 3-point range (10 percent). For the game, the Stormers were outscored 33-11 in bench points, 24-12 from 3-point range and 11-4 at the free-throw line. Not to mention, they lost the turnover battle 24-19.
Sophomore forward
Moriah Landry paced the Stormers with a near double-double, finishing with nine points, a team-high 12 rebounds, two assists and two steals. Freshman guard
Laila Hamiel followed closely with nine points, five rebounds, four assists and a team-best five steals.
Freshman center Zihre Sellers added nine points, 10 rebounds and two steals, while freshman Moaniyah Woolridge contributed seven points, 10 boards, two assists and a block.
