BENTON HARBOR, Mich. — The Milwaukee Area Technical College women's basketball team nearly erased a 15‑point halftime deficit Saturday, but its late surge fell short in a 62-60 road loss to Lake Michigan College. The Stormers outscored the Red Hawks 22-10 in the fourth quarter yet slipped to 1-2 overall and 1-2 away from home.
Despite dominating Lake Michigan on the glass with a 54-30 rebounding advantage, the Stormers struggled to take care of the basketball. MATC committed 26 turnovers compared to the Red Hawks' 10 and shot just 36.4 percent from the free‑throw line (8 of 22). The lack of ball security and missed opportunities at the stripe proved decisive.
"We had a slow start," MATC head coach
Arom Murrell said. "Seven turnovers and only nine points in the opening quarter was the ball game. As the game progressed, we settled in and totally commanded the second half.
Zirhe Sellers gave us huge contributions off the bench."
MATC finished 25 of 68 from the field (36.8 percent), 2 of 11 from 3‑point range (18.2 percent) and 8 of 22 at the line (36.4 percent). The Stormers added 15 assists, seven steals and a block to go with their 54 rebounds, including 17 on the offensive glass.
Freshman center
Zirhe Sellers set a career high with 16 points and recorded her first double‑double of the season by pulling down 13 rebounds. First-year guard
Emani Summers nearly added a double‑double of her own, finishing with 13 points and nine rebounds on 5 of 12 shooting. Freshman guard
Laila Hamiel also scored 13 points to go with five assists, four rebounds and three steals.
Freshman center Maniyah Wooldridge contributed eight points, eight rebounds, one block and an assist while going a perfect 2 of 2 from the free‑throw line.
