OAK CREEK, Wis. — The Milwaukee Area Technical College women's soccer team closed out its regular-season campaign with a 1-1 draw against Madison College during its Sophomore Day on Wednesday.
The Stormers fell behind less than a minute into the match when the WolfPack converted a penalty kick just 34 seconds in, but they quickly answered with a goal 12 minutes later. Neither side scored over the final 78 minutes.
"It's not how we drew it up," MATC head coach Aron "Buddy" Gentry said of conceding so early. "We had a lot of emotion coming into those first couple of minutes, and I don't think we were fully present in what we wanted to achieve. We cleaned that up quickly, and we ended up getting a tie, which kept the points we desperately needed for our seeding in the upcoming postseason."
The Stormers managed the result despite being outshot across the board. MATC finished with eight shots, three on goal and three corner kicks, while Madison nearly doubled those totals with 24 shots, 10 on goal and four corners.
Starting goalkeeper
Caroline Buczynski recorded nine saves, including seven in the second half, to preserve the tie. Sophomore forward
Katelyn Haeft led the Stormers with four shots, including one on goal, while freshman midfielder
Vanessa Reyes added a shot on target and
Yocelin Valdez-Galindo registered one shot.
Prior to kickoff, MATC honored its sophomore class of Haeft,
Lia Peterson,
Katelyn Bassler and
Hannah Christopherson.
"Those four individuals have been instrumental in our success over the last two years," Gentry said. "They've been the backbone of our program, and they are surely going to be missed."
