KANKAKEE, Ill. — The Milwaukee Area Technical College women's soccer team fell 6-3 to Kankakee Community College on the road Wednesday afternoon, dropping the Stormers to 3-5-1 on the season.
MATC took an early lead and showed stretches of the same fight it has displayed throughout the season, but a four-goal first-half flurry by Kankakee put the Stormers in a hole they could not overcome. MATC battled back with two late scores in the second half, but the early deficit proved too much to erase.
"A disappointing result, but a valuable lesson," Stormers head coach Aron "Buddy" Gentry said. "We proved in the second half that we belong, but to win in this region [Region 4], we have to play a complete game.Â
"We can't waste minutes, and we can't waste opportunities. We have the student-athletes to be successful, finding that consistency for the entirety of the match will be our focus."
The Stormers grabbed an early lead in the seventh minute when freshman midfielder
Adalyn Raue found the back of the net off a crisp feed from
Vanessa Reyes.
MATC held the 1-0 advantage until the 26th minute, when Kankakee tied the match. The Cavaliers then scored three times in the final 15 minutes of the first half, including a penalty kick in the 32nd minute, before adding goals in the 41st and 42nd minutes to take a 4-1 lead into halftime.
KCC extended its lead with two more goals in the second half before the Stormers answered with two late goals of their own. Raue scored her second of the match in the 77th minute to make it 6-2, and freshman
Yaremy Calzada added MATC's final goal in the closing minutes. Reyes assisted on both scores.
MATC finished with 13 shots and put seven on goal. Kankakee also recorded 13 shots but put 11 on target, including seven in the second half. The Stormers also held a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Raue scored twice on three shots on goal to lead the Stormers. Reyes added two shots on goal and a team-high three assists. Goalkeeper
Caroline Buczynski made nine saves for MATC, including five after halftime.Â
The loss marked MATC's fifth consecutive defeat after its 3-0 start to the season.
