MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The Milwaukee Area Technical College women's soccer team battled through a scoreless first half before dropping a 1-0 decision to Elgin Community College on Saturday afternoon at Laura Moynihan Field at Engelmann Stadium.
The one-goal defeat dropped the Stormers to 3-4-1 overall, extended their losing streak to four matches and left MATC to move to 0-1 on neutral fields this season.
"Our women's soccer team gave their all on the pitch today, coming up just short in a tight match against Elgin," Stormers head coach Aron "Buddy" Gentry said. "While the final whistle didn't bring the result their relentless effort deserved, the grit and character they displayed showed exactly what this program is built on."
For nearly 60 minutes, the Stormers relied on a strong defensive effort and another standout performance from second-year starting goalkeeper
Caroline Buczynski to keep the match deadlocked.
Buczynski recorded 12 saves, including seven in the first half, as she repeatedly turned aside Elgin scoring opportunities. The sophomore added five more saves after halftime and kept the contest scoreless until the Spartans finally broke through in the 60th minute on an assisted goal.
Despite facing consistent pressure, the Stormers entered halftime locked in a scoreless draw. Elgin finished the match with 17 shots, including 12 on goal, and earned three corner kicks.
MATC struggled to generate sustained offensive chances, totaling seven shots, including just a pair of shots on goal. Freshman forward
Anyelis Alamilla Cruz and freshman midfielder
Adalyn Raue each recorded a shot on goal for the Stormers, who managed just two shot attempts during the second half.
Following Elgin's breakthrough goal, the Stormers searched for an equalizer over the final 30 minutes but were unable to find the tying score.
The defensive effort, anchored by Buczynski, kept MATC within striking distance throughout the afternoon despite significant pressure from the Spartans' attack.
