OAK CREEK, Wis. — The Milwaukee Area Technical College women's soccer team made history Wednesday, shattering a program record by erupting for 10 goals in a commanding 10-2 home victory over Kankakee Community College.
The Stormers took control early with an aggressive attack, totaling 17 first-half shots — 12 of them on goal — to build a 3-1 halftime lead. MATC poured it on in the second half, converting all three penalty kicks and outscoring the Cavaliers 7-1 over the final 45 minutes.
The relentless offensive performance secured the program's first-ever 10-goal outing and capped an emphatic eight-goal win, improving the Stormers to 2-0-1 on the season. \
"I think today was the most they've worked as a team all season," MATC assistant coach Sarah Sweeney said of her team's historic offensive performance. "We were connecting really well through the midfield, which has been a focus in practice. The girls were working for each other and following through on the game plan."
Sophomore forward
Katelyn Haeft delivered a standout performance, setting a new career high with four goals on just seven shots — including three in the second half.
Her first goal came late in the opening half, when she beat a defender to create a one-on-one opportunity with the goalkeeper and finished in the back-right corner. Haeft opened the second half with a successful penalty kick in the 52nd minute, then added her third goal at the 64-minute mark with a sharp dribble move and unassisted finish to complete the hat trick. She capped her scoring with a header off a well-placed assist from freshman teammate
Vanessa Reyes.
"It feels really good to have made such a big impact against KCC," Haeft said. "I liked how we connected as a team and had fun together. Our passing was great, and we finally figured things out."
Of her four goals, Haeft said her favorite was the last, as she had been determined to score on a header this season.
"My favorite goal today had to have been my header because that was my first of the season, and I've really been wanting one," Haeft said.
Beyond Haeft's brilliance, the Stormers received strong performances from sophomore midfielder
Lia Peterson and freshman forward
Keegan Grace Boyd, who each netted two goals. Peterson opened the scoring in the 18th minute with a finish off a ricochet to give MATC a 1-0 lead, then capped the match with a goal in the 81st minute off a well-placed pass from Haeft. Boyd sparked the second-half surge, scoring both of her goals in the final 20 minutes of play.
In addition to MATC's trio of multi-goal scorers, two other players found the back of the net. Freshmen
Gracie New and
Vanessa Reyes each tallied goals, with New's coming in the first half and Reyes' in the second.
MATC's freshman goalkeeper
Caroline Buczynski turned in another solid outing, recording five saves while allowing just two goals.
In total, the Stormers finished with 22 shots on goal in 35 attempts, converting 10 of them. MATC also held a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks.
"I think the team is gelling really well, and the more we connect off the field, the more we're beginning to trust each other," Sweeney said. "In our first game, we played more for ourselves. But as we've gotten to know each other better, we're playing less selfishly, finding each other, trusting our teammates — and it's working."
