LANSING, Mich. — No. 14 Milwaukee Area Technical College (MATC) fell 70-69 to Lansing Community College on Friday, coming up one point short despite a 52-28 advantage on the glass and balanced scoring effort from its starters. The loss dropped the Stormers to 7-3 overall and 4-3 on the road.
MATC trailed 36-34 at halftime but outscored Lansing 35-34 in the second half. The Stormers struggled to find consistent offense, finishing 22-of-65 (33.8 percent) from the field and 5-of-18 (27.8 percent) from three-point range. MATC made 20-of-31 free throws (64.5 percent), while Lansing shot 30-of-69 (43.5 percent), hit 3-of-11 from long range (27.3 percent) and converted 7-of-16 at the line (43.8 percent).
Despite dominating the boards, MATC's miscues proved costly. The Stormers committed 26 turnovers to Lansing's 13, and those giveaways repeatedly ended promising possessions and led to transition opportunities for the hosts. MATC recorded 17 assists to Lansing's 20, but the combination of poor shooting and extra possessions for Lansing ultimately decided the outcome.
"Friday we did not come ready to play," MATC head coach
Randy Casey said. "We did not stick to our defensive principles. When we don't play well on the defensive end our offense struggles as well."
Sophomore guard
Jordan Jones paced MATC with 11 points, going a perfect 4-for-4 at the free-throw line while adding three rebounds, one assist and four steals in 25 minutes. Sophomore point guard
Raydelh Boutin contributed 10 points, eight rebounds and five assists in 28 minutes. Freshman forward
Jason Lawani finished with nine points and nine rebounds, and freshman guard
Sterling Hoarde added nine points and three assists while logging a team-high 31 minutes. Off the bench,
Noah Daniels and
Ozzie Johnson each chipped in eight points, with Daniels also grabbing six rebounds and recording three steals.
