MILWAUKEE, Wis - The MATC Stormers women's basketball team started slow and then ran out of gas against Sauk Valley Community College on Tuesday night at the Reiman Gymnasium, losing their opening game of the season, 63-54.
Sauk Valley jumped out to an early 10-2 lead and led 16-9 after the first quarter. MATC got into a groove in the second quarter, outscoring Sauk Valley 26-16 in the second quarter to take a 35-32 lead into halftime. Sauk Valley took over in the second half, outscoring MATC 31-19.
MATC won the rebounding battle, 38-34, and shot better from the field and distance. Sauk Valley had more free throws made (17) than MATC attempted (16). The Stormers committed 30 turnovers to just 15 for Sauk Valley. Sauk Valley had 16 steals in the game.
The Stormers were led by
Monica Thompson who scored 15 points, all via the three-point basket.
Mickaiah Jones-Cogwell contributed 11 points and 8 rebounds and
Brittany Kaltenberg added 10 points, going 7-of-10 from the free throw line.
Tara Jefferson scored 5 points and pulled down 10 rebounds.
