Joe Kuntner

Entering his fifth season as head softball coach at Milwaukee Area Technical College, Joe Kuntner leads a program shaped by record-setting success and postseason grit. His 2025 team set a new standard with 32 wins and the program’s first trip to the NJCAA Region 4 Quarterfinal Tournament championship game, a breakthrough that marked one of the region’s biggest single-season jumps. MATC fought its way back to that same stage in 2026, winning three straight elimination games after a 24–32 regular season. Those back-to-back deep postseason runs reflect the toughness and competitive identity the Stormers have built under Kuntner as they head into the 2026–27 campaign.

Since taking over in 2023, Kuntner has guided the Stormers to a 72-81-1 overall record, emphasizing individual player development, team discipline, and academic achievement.

A local Milwaukee native, Kuntner is a graduate of Milwaukee Hamilton High School, where he competed on the varsity baseball team between 1986-1988. He began his college education at Milwaukee Area Technical College (1989–1991) before earning a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee in 1996.

As a mentor, Kuntner brings more than 20 years of coaching experience at the youth, high school, and collegiate levels. His career has included key roles with Franklin Force, Greenfield Ignitors, and Mt. Mary University (2013), as well as long-standing involvement with Greenfield Little League. At the high school level, he served as head JV softball coach at Pius XI Catholic High School from 2015 to 2019, and later as an assistant softball coach at both West Allis Hale and Greendale High School.

Kuntner has led several 14U travel teams to tournament championships across Wisconsin and currently serves as head recruiter for Delta Sports Performance. In that role, he has helped countless softball players advance to the NCAA, NAIA, and junior college levels. His coaching and recruiting background also includes early involvement with 2022 NBA champion and current Golden State Warriors guard Brandin Podziemski.

Away from the softball diamond, Kuntner is a proud, widowed father of three—Kayla, Madison, and Charlie.
