SUGAR GROVE, Ill. — MATC baseball was held to just two total hits across 14 innings of action Monday, dropping both games of a road doubleheader at Waubonsee Community College, 8–0 and 4–1, to fall to 13–19 overall and 2–14 on the road this season.
The Stormers managed only a single by
Gavin Garnica in the opener and were limited to one unearned run in Game 2 despite a pitching duel that saw both teams record just one hit. Waubonsee broke open the nightcap with a three‑run fourth inning fueled by walks, a hit‑by‑pitch and two MATC defensive errors, and the Stormers were unable to mount a late push.
"It was a tough day at the yard," MATC head baseball coach
Caleb Bounds said. "We just couldn't get anything going at the plate. We had a lot of hard outs, but they just weren't falling for hits. We just have to wipe that day and get back ready to go Thursday against Bryant & Stratton."
Game 1: Waubonsee 8, MATC 0 (7 Innings)
MATC was limited to one hit and just three total baserunners in the opener, falling 8–0 as Waubonsee's starter faced only four batters over the minimum.
Gavin Garnica recorded the Stormers' lone hit with a single in the second inning after
Easton Morehouse drew a walk, while
Carson Sieler reached twice on walks and added the team's only stolen base. The Stormers went three up, three down in the first, fourth, fifth and seventh innings.
Starter Peyton Jibben kept MATC in the game early, retiring six straight across the second and third innings, but a leadoff triple in the fourth sparked a two‑run frame that put Waubonsee ahead 2–0. The Chiefs broke the game open in the fifth, stringing together four RBI hits and a walk to push the margin to 6–0. Two more runs came across in the sixth on a pair of RBI singles.
Jibben (1-4) took the loss, allowing six earned runs on eight hits and one walk with five strikeouts over five innings.
Bralen Mitcham handled the sixth, giving up two earned runs on three hits and a walk.
Game 2: Waubonsee 4, MATC 1 (7 Innings)
MATC's offense was stifled for much of the nightcap, going three up, three down in the first four innings and again in the seventh, managing only two baserunners and one hit in a 4–1 loss that completed the sweep.
The Stormers didn't put a runner on base until
Jaiden Jung drew a leadoff walk in the fifth. Jung stole second, advanced to third on a flyout and scored on a passed ball to cut the deficit to 4–1. MATC's only hit came an inning later when
Blake Bugher singled with one out in the sixth, but the Stormers were unable to build on it.
Waubonsee broke a scoreless start with a run in the third, using a walk, a hit‑by‑pitch and an RBI single to take a 1–0 lead. The Chiefs added three more in the fourth, capitalizing on two MATC defensive errors, two walks, a hit‑by‑pitch and an RBI groundout to create the separation needed in a low‑offense game.
Starter Manny Sostra (0-1) took the loss, allowing four runs (one earned) on one hit and three walks with two strikeouts over three innings.
Zakary Vanlerberghe followed with a scoreless inning of relief, striking out one.
Trey Jones added another scoreless frame with one walk and one strikeout, and
Charlie Cefalu recorded two outs without allowing a hit.
